This transformation brings both extraordinary opportunity and genuine ethical complexity. Understanding both is essential for any attorney navigating modern practice.
Where AI Is Delivering Real Value
Legal Research
AI-powered legal research platforms have dramatically reduced the time required to identify relevant precedent, trace the subsequent history of cases, and identify analogous fact patterns across jurisdictions. Tasks that once required hours of Westlaw or Lexis research can now be completed in minutes, with AI systems that understand the semantic content of legal questions rather than simply matching keywords.
The quality of AI legal research has also improved substantially. Early systems frequently missed relevant cases or returned false positives. Current systems, trained on comprehensive legal corpora and fine-tuned on attorney feedback, produce research results that compare favorably with those produced by experienced associates in controlled studies.
Document Review and Analysis
Large-scale document review has been transformed by AI. - Understand the training data underlying any AI tool you use. Tools trained on outdated legal corpora may miss recent developments. Tools trained on non-legal data may produce outputs that are fluent but legally incorrect.
- Disclose AI use where required by court rules or client agreements, and consider proactive disclosure even where not required.
- Maintain human judgment at every decision point that affects client interests. AI can inform decisions; it should not make them.
- Document your verification process so that you can demonstrate, if challenged, that you exercised independent professional judgment rather than simply relying on AI output.
The attorneys who will thrive in the AI era are not those who resist these tools, nor those who adopt them uncritically. They are those who develop the judgment to use AI effectively while maintaining the professional responsibility standards that define the legal profession.
